Humanity and Systems - Yin and Yang

Since ancient times humanity has created systems, structures and institutions, that in turn create the rules that govern people's behavior and societal order. Thus there is a symbiotic relationship between systems/rules and humanity/society.

This yin-yang relationship (complementary, interconnected and interdependent) is at the core of Pow*r!. Reinvent the rules and you change behavior and outcomes. Reinvent the rules to the benefit of all and you plant the seeds of peace, opportunity and wellbeing throughout the world.

Revolving around this relationship are 6 principles that guide our work. 3 are people focused, 3 are systems focused. As you will see, they overlap and reinforce each other.

They are the only piece of “top-down” in this program and you can change them after the transfer to NUKO. Until that time, these are the principles we live by. If you don’t think you can abide them, please don’t join.

People-focused Principles

1. We the people (Inclusion)

Historically systems/rules were decided by the strong, powerful and rich, most times to their benefit.

To change that paradigm, Pow*r! broadens decision making to include regular people aged 14 plus from anywhere. The young have the most future - they should be involved in decisions.

2. Self-Organized Democracy (Organization, Leadership, Decision Making)

This is part of the reinvention:

  • hierarchy becomes self-organization

  • positional leadership becomes personal leadership

  • power over (others) becomes pow*r to (co-create), and

  • top-down decision making becomes democratic.

3. Love Fun Together (Energy)

We have 3 values only, that set the energy of our interactions:

  • We love each other - as in the Golden Rule (love your neighbour as yourself, do unto others as you would have them do unto you)

  • We have fun - bureaucratic rule making is excruciatingly boring because it’s solely intellectual. What we are doing is head and heart - it’s creative, it’s exploring potentials, it’s bringing out the best in ourselves. Shaking up the status quo is always fun.

  • We do it together - everyone is equal (no top-down), everyone has pow*r and the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

These three encourage creative flow between equals and make for an expansive, enjoyable experience for everyone.


System-focused Principles

1. Reinventing Systems (Focus)

Fixing a problem plugs a hole; reinventing the system enables new potentials.

Yes, it requires higher-level thinking and is a co-creative stretch. But, system reinvention enables you to achieve a desired future versus being stuck with the same old thing.

2. See the Ideal; make it real (Process)

Another way to say this is “Have Clear Intent”. Or “Start with end in mind” and ask “what needs to happen for this to become real?”. (Like the Roadmap from NOW to POW).

And so potential is turned into possibility, then into probability and finally into reality.

3. To the Benefit of all (Decision Criterion)

This is the only decision criterion. If something is not to the benefit of all, it is clearly not ideal and does not follow the golden rule.

To the benefit of all is the key that opens the door to peace, opportunity and wellbeing for humanity.

Take them all together, and you can see that we are not only reinventing systems but also reinventing the way that systems are created in the first place.


How Empow*r U! Works

There are four streams of focus in EU which are summarized in the chart below. There is no limit to which stream you can play in.

The framework consists of Streams, Courses, Experiences and Transfers.

Streams are general areas of focus encompassing the more specific Courses and Experiences necessary to meet the Challenge objectives

  • the Star Stream focussing on personal development

  • the Platform Stream where Members learn how to develop a reinvention platform, and then do it

  • the Reinvention Stream where Members use the reinvention platform to experience reinventing real-world systems, and

  • the NUKO Stream where Members design and create an organization.

Apart from the Reinvention Stream, which can only take place after the Platform Stream is completed, the Streams run concurrently.

Note that Members choose their own level of involvement. There is no requirement to do everything or anything for that matter. Nor is the timing rigid - as Members are co-creating the courses and experiences, the framework has to be flexible.


Upon graduation (everybody graduates) the following transfers are made:

  • the Intellectual Property (IP) created by Members (the Courses, the Platform and the Reinventions) are transferred from Empower U! to NUKO

  • the ownership of NUKO is transferred from Empower U! to Members.

As a result, Members now own the means, as well as the expertise, to spread Peace, Opportunity and Wellbeing for all.!

Course Development Process

Co-creating a course requires a different process than the usual top-down, professor- or author-led process.

Take systems thinking for example. Clearly, to reinvent systems requires knowledge of systems thinking, but there are many models that describe how to do it. In a top down process, one author makes all the decisions; in the EU! process there may be hundreds of people who wish to contribute, which makes decision making more complex (to say the least!).

A successful process requires:

  • the course concept to be clear about what what is to be achieved

  • openness and flexibility about content (there’s more than one way to do it)

  • willingness to experiment.

Once an invitation is issued, anybody can join the development process; we consider this will be as great (or greater) a source of learning than the course itself.

Course development will commence as soon as possible.
